A World Heritage Site, and the heartland of Bamar culture; thousands of magnificent Buddhist pagodas and stupas – many dating back to the 12th century – are the main attraction here. The tallest and most majestic is built of brick and is decorated inside with beautiful frescoes. Bagan remains an active religious site and place of pilgrimage.
Located some 30 miles from Bagan this is said to be the core of an extinct volcano, covered in lush forests and protected within the Mountain Park. One of the fascinating things about Myanmar is the on-going worship of the nat (spirit being) and the Taung Kalat shrine here at Mount Popa is a major venue for nat worship.
