DELHI – LUCKNOW – AGRA – JAIPUR – CHHATRA SAGAR – RAWLA NARLAI – UDAIPUR – DELHI
We invite you on a journey to a land of vibrant colour and spectacle, warm welcome and hospitality. You will visit some spectacular and memorable sights, as well as experiencing some of the villages and communities in rural India. There will be garlands and welcomes, time for independent wandering and relaxation by the pool – and some delicious food and tastings!
Our February 2019 tour of Northern India & Rajasthan starts in DELHI, the capital city of India. We will explore New Delhi including Lutyen’s fine buildings; and the lanes and bustling bazaars of Old Delhi with a specialist guide. We stay here for two nights at The Imperial Hotel, an iconic hotel in a central location.
We leave Delhi by flight to the fabled city of LUCKNOW. On the collapse of the Mughal Empire, Lucknow was soon recognised as the fabled city of Nawabs, best remembered for their refined and extravagant lifestyles. A stroll through the many imambaaras, chowks and lanes will reveal azure domes and golden minarets, and Phulwari Galli (the Alley of Flowers) where exquisite chikan work is embroidered by generations of women within tiny houses.
Our stay in Lucknow is for two nights at the Gomti Nagar Vivanta by Taj hotel, with time to savour some of Lucknow’s authentic and delicious Dum-style cuisine.
We leave Lucknow by road, in a comfortable air-conditioned coach, together with our accompanying guide, to AGRA, home of the wondrous Taj Mahal which we will visit at sunrise, together with the lesser known Tomb of Itimad ud Daulah.
Our stay in Agra is for two nights at the friendly and relaxed Trident Hotel.
The journey continues by road from Agra via the atmospheric deserted city of FATHEPUR SIKRI into Rajasthan, land of the Rajputs, fine forts and splendid palaces.
To JAIPUR, known as the Pink City, because of the Mughal and Rajasthani architecture washed in this colour.
Excursions will include the Amber Fort and the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), with time for some shopping and relaxation! We stay at the beautiful Samode Haveli.
You may even decide to take a hot air balloon ride whilst we are in Jaipur. It is one way to see the desert state!
The next day we drive to CHHATRA SAGAR. This is a magical place everybody loves! Delightful and luxurious tents pitched on a dam, overlooking a lake that is teeming with seasonal birds and surrounded by grasslands replete with wildlife. Delight in some of the finest, most interesting home cooking in Rajasthan.
From Chhatra Sagar we continue our journey by road to RAWLA NARLAI, a stylish 17th-century former hunting retreat of the Maharaja of Jodhpur and ideally located near the Jain temples of Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh Fort. The village of Narlai is also home to several baoris (step wells) a perfect setting for a special dinner!
Our tour continues to the lake city of UDAIPUR. This is perhaps the most romantic of all Rajasthani cities with an amazing palace complex overlooking the lake, picturesque havelis and ghats (riverside steps)with winding lanes and bustling bazaars to wander and explore.
In Udaipur we stay at Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel, part of the Palace complex.
From Udaipur we take a short flight back to DELHI where we have one last night at the Imperial Hotel before departure transfers to the international airport.
Alternatively you can extend your time in India – perhaps to one of India’s National Parks to see wildlife, or to one of India’s golden beaches in Goa or in South India. We can happily plan a tailor-made extension tour for you!
