Despite its small size Sri Lanka is included amongst the top five biodiversity hotspots in the world. National parks give a chance of a leopard sighting, herds of wild Asian elephants and the richest diversity of amphibians in the world. Birds, however, are the glory of Sri Lankan wildlife.
There are opportunities for elephant interaction and rides through forest trails, and the waters off Sri Lanka are home to the planet’s biggest creature, the blue whale. Mirissa and Dondra Head, as well as Trincomalee on the east coast are good for whale watching tours. As well as the blue whale there are sperm whales and dolphins.
